Time to Dehumidify
In the winter we talked about the need to add moisture back into your house, well now it is time to take it out. In winter with very dry air and with heat the indoor relative humidity can drop below five percent. When the relative humidity is that low you need to add moisture to the air in your house. A bowl of water by your night table will help you sleep better in the winter. I think it's safe to say our furnaces are done for the next five months and with warmer weather comes more moisture. If you have a humidifier attached to your furnace make sure it is turned off.
If you have a basement or a musty room this time of year you need to take moisture out of the air with a dehumidifier. We have been lucky so far in May with cool days and low humidity but that changes WednesdayRelative humidity this time of year can be one hundred percent. If the dew point outside is seventy degrees and temperature in your home is seventy two degrees then your indoor relative humidity is ninety two percent. I like the dehumidifiers that run continuously until full. I do not leave them running if I leave town but if we're home it is running. I remember growing up and mopping the basement floor because in the old days the dehumidifier kept running long after it was full. Those shut off systems are nice. Our kids have it so easy today. Remember to keep the coils clean and to rinse out the container that catches the water with some Clorox from time to time.
