April Almanac

The average Downtown high temperature for early April is around sixty two degrees. By the end of the month the average high jumps into the low seventies. The 'Full Pink Moon' is on Thursday the twenty fifth. Average rainfall for the month is around two and three quarter inches. We are about two inches behind in rainfall for this year. March did not quite produce average rainfall but was within seven tenths of average with a final total of two and eight tenths.

Believe it or not we average a trace of snow downtown and one tenth of an inch out at Dulles for the month of April. Our largest April snow downtown was five and one half inches in 1924 on April Fool's Day. What always perplexes me is that we average a trace or more of snow six months of the year (November through April) yet we have to cut our grass eight and sometimes nine months of the year. We will be tempted to plant flowers when the mercury hits seventy but please resist. Hopefully you read yesterday's column on the subject. The best weekend to plant flowers and be safe from all late frosts is Mother's Day weekend. The average last frost Downtown is early April but remember this is the average not the latest recorded frost. In Gaithersburg and Leesburg your average last frost is in the middle part of the month. If we go all the way out to Garrett County then the average last frost is not until early June !

You will need a telescope but Saturn will be facing the earth, in other words not tilted and very bright the last week of the month. This is Saturn's best 'opposition' in six years and the best chance to see its rings. The full moon will pass to the lower right of Saturn on the twenty fifth around nightfall.
