San Diego, CA ( - Andy Murray defeated American Sam Querrey to send Great Britain to the last eight of the Davis Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Murray, the reigning Wimbledon champion, clinched the best-of-five opening- round tie with Sunday's 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-3 triumph in the first reverse singles rubber on the red clay at Petco Park.

The Brits had not beaten the United States in Davis Cup play since 1935.

Murray and James Ward swept Friday's opening singles to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. After Murray dropped only six games in a straight-set demolition of Donald Young, the 175th-ranked Ward pulled off a surprising five-set victory over Querrey.

The Americans stayed alive when twins Bob and Mike Bryan battled past the British duo of Colin Fleming and Dominic Inglot in Saturday's doubles rubber.

Great Britain will play Italy in the quarterfinals in April.
