Tursunov ousted on home turf; Gulbis into semis in Russia

St. Petersburg, Russia (Sports Network) - Fourth-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov was a quarterfinal upset victim Friday, while sixth-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis landed in the semifinals at the St. Petersburg Open tennis event.

Portugal's Joao Sousa upended the 31-year-old Tursunov in 6-4, 6-3 fashion, while Gulbis eased into the final four with a 6-1, 6-2 pasting of Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut on the indoor hardcourts at the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex.

"I am really happy about this tournament," Sousa said. "I have been playing really good. Today, Dmitry didn't play his best, but I am happy with my performance and I look forward to the next match."

Also on Day 5, Poland's Michal Przysiezny upended seventh-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 6-3 and Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez knocked out eighth-seeded Uzbekistanian Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-4.

The semifinals will pit Gulbis against Przysiezny and Sousa versus Garcia- Lopez.

The 2013 St. Petersburg titlist will earn $78,000.
