Lopez, Baghdatis advance in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden (Sports Network) - Fifth seed Feliciano Lopez and seventh- seeded Marcos Baghdatis were a pair of first-round victors, while defending champion Gael Monfils lost his opening-round bout Tuesday at the Stockholm Open tennis tournament

The Spaniard Lopez launched 26 aces before outlasting Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, while the Cypriot Baghdatis blitzed Belgian David Goffin 6-4, 6-2 on the indoor courts at The Royal Lawn Tennis Club of Stockholm, where Baghdatis titled in 2009.

Monfils, who bested Finland's Jarkko Nieminen in three sets to capture this event last October, was upset by Swedish wild card Patrik Rosenholm. The 24- year-old upended the French veteran by a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 count.

Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, a wild card this week, reached the second round by beating South African Kevin Anderson 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The two players combined for 20 aces in the 2-hour, 27-minute affair, including 11 by the loser.

Up next for Hewitt will be eighth-seeded Nieminen, who also reached the finals here in 2001 and 2006.

Other Day-2 wins came for Romanian qualifier Marius Copil, Estonian Jurgen Zopp, Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, Colombian Alejandro Falla, Japan's Go Soeda, and Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky. Soeda will face top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

The 2012 Stockholm champ will earn $113,795.
