On Thursday evening, May 7, former NFL coach Mike Holmgren will join Head Coach of the Washington Redskins Jim Zorn at FedExField for a send-off celebration for Mike Holmgren's wife Kathy and daughter Calla, who are leaving for Uganda, Africa. Kathy and Calla are joining a group of Medical Teams International volunteers to care for families who have been forced from their homes by the ongoing fighting in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo...fighting that is claiming the lives of nearly 45,000 people every month - half of those children. Experts have called the fighting in the Congo the deadliest conflict since World War II.

The evening, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Owner's Club of FedExField, will also serve as an introduction of Medical Teams International to the D.C. community. Medical Teams International is a non-profit organization that has shipped more than 1.2 billion in antibiotics, surgical kits and lifesaving medicines to care for 35 million people in 100 countries around the world since 1979. More than 2,000 volunteers meet the needs of people worldwide each year.

The Zorn and Holmgren families have been strong supporters of Medical Teams International since they coached together in Seattle. Kathy, who is a nurse in Seattle, and Calla, a physician in Salt Lake City, both cared for war survivors inside the Congo in 2006 rather than joining Coach Holmgren at Superbowl XL. On this current Medical Teams International trip, they will provide medical assistance to the sick in internally displaced people's camps across the border in Southwest Uganda, dispensing urgently-needed medical supplies.
