WASHINGTON (AP) -- Brian Gilmore made a layup and a free throw with 18.3 seconds left and top-seeded American advanced to the Patriot League semifinals for the seventh straight year with a 62-60 comeback win over eighth-seeded Holy Cross on Wednesday.
The Crusaders led 28-22 at halftime before American (19-11) quickly tied it with 3-pointers by Garrison Carr and Bryce Simon. The Eagles took their first lead at 51-50 when Gilmore made an open 3 with 5 1/2 minutes left.
The teams traded the lead three times before Colin Cunningham hit a pair of free throws with 1 minute 18 seconds remaining, putting Holy Cross (15-14) ahead 60-59.
Pat Doherty had a chance to extend the lead, but missed two free throws with less than a minute to go. Simon then hit Gilmore inside, and he was fouled as his layup bounced in, then made his free throw to complete the winning play.
On Holy Cross' next possession, Jordan Nichols stripped Doherty of the ball on the perimeter and it rolled out of bounds with 1.3 seconds left, and Cunningham couldn't get off the potential game-winner in time.
Derrick Mercer scored 16 points and Carr scored 11 of his 14 in the second half for American, which beat the Crusaders at home for the first time in four years. The Eagles reached their highest win total since the 1989-90 season and will host a semifinal game Sunday.
For the Crusaders, Tim Clifford had 23 points and three blocks and Cunningham scored a career-high 20.
