Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - The United States could host a 16- nation special Copa America tournament in 2016 that will feature the 10 South American teams and six from CONCACAF, including the United States and Mexico.

South American governing body CONMEBOL revealed the plans Wednesday, and said the tournament will be contested in July 2016, just after Euro 2016. The final four teams from CONCACAF will be selected based on the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The tournament will mark the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL. Although CONMEBOL announced its plans, the event featuring two regions will have to be approved by FIFA and finalized with CONCACAF and U.S. Soccer, which has made no formal announcement about the tournament.

The United States has appeared in the Copa America three times, in 1993, 1995 and 2007. The Americans finished fourth in 1995.

The special tournament in the United States will not change the scheduled Copa America tournaments in 2015 in Chile or in 2019 in Brazil.
