Indiana's Catchings honored as top defensive player

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings has been named the WNBA's Defensive Player of the Year for the 2012 season.

In voting by a nationwide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, Catchings received 19 out of 41 votes, a whopping 11 more than Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry. Los Angeles teammates Candace Parker (6) and Alana Beard (4), Atlanta's Sancho Lyttle (2), Connecticut center Tina Charles (1) and San Antonio forwards Sophia Young (1) received the remaining votes.

Catchings ranked first in the Eastern Conference in scoring average (17.4 ppg), a figure which also ranked second in the entire league among forwards. The 33-year-old also led the Fever in rebounding (7.6 rpg), steals (2.06 spg) and blocks (0.85 bpg) and double-doubles with 10.

Selected as the East's player of the month for August, Catchings also finished fourth in defensive rebounding, fifth in total steals and sixth in total rebounds. After 11 seasons with Indiana, the Tennessee product holds averages of 16.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists over 347 games.
