Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli suffered a fractured right hand during Friday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, an injury that could sideline him for six or more weeks.

Cervelli was removed after taking a foul tip from Toronto's Rajai Davis, the game's leadoff hitter, off his hand to begin the top of the first. The Yankees later disclosed the fracture, which the team stated will require surgery.

The 26-year-old Venezuelan had won the Yankees' starting catcher job in spring training and was having a fine start to the regular season, batting .269 (14- of-52) with three home runs and eight RBI in 16 games.

Chris Stewart replaced Cervelli behind the plate in Friday's contest.
