Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a dislocated right shoulder the veteran sustained on Opening Day.

An MRI taken Tuesday revealed torn cartilage in Ludwick's right shoulder, the Reds announced. The team has not provided a timetable on how long the 34-year- old, who served as Cincinnati's cleanup hitter during Monday's 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, will be out of action.

Ludwick suffered the injury while diving head-first into third base during the third inning of Monday's opener. He was immediately removed from the contest in favor of a pinch runner.

An integral part of Cincinnati's run to last season's National League Central title, Ludwick was re-signed to a two-year contract by the Reds over the winter and batted .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBI over 125 games in 2012.

The Reds will formally place Ludwick on the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game with the Angels, with Chris Heisey expected to be the club's primary left fielder in the interim.
