Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros have designated left handed
pitcher Nelson Figueroa for assignment on Monday.
Figueroa, who signed one-year, $900,000 contract with Houston during the
offseason, will have a few days to either accept a minor league assignment or
become a free agent.
The starter-turned-reliever worked two innings in Monday's 6-1 loss to
Cincinnati, allowing one run on three hits, while walking two. He is 0-3 with
an 8.69 ERA in 29 innings this season.
Filling the vacated roster spot is Sergio Escalona, who was called up from
Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 26-year-old lefthander is 1-0 with three saves and
a 3.38 ERA in 16 innings with the RedHawks this season.
