Brookline, MA (Sports Network) - Brady Watt won the final hole against Scottie
Scheffler to take his only lead and advance to Saturday's semifinals at the
U.S. Amateur Championship.
Watt was 2-down with six holes to go, but a par at the last helped him earn
the 1-up win. He was able to overcome a hole-in-one by Scheffler at the par-3
seventh at The Country Club.
The Australian moves on to face countryman Oliver Goss, who ousted Brandon
Matthews, 5 & 3.
The other semifinal will have Corey Conners facing Matt Fitzpatrick. Conners
matched Goss for the biggest win of the day as took down Neil Raymond, 5 & 3.
Fitzpatrick cruised to a 4 & 3 win over Adam Ball.
Watt and Scheffler both had three wins in the first eight holes. Scheffler,
the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur winner, followed his ace on the seventh with a
bogey at the eighth to square the match.
Scheffler won the ninth and 10th the go 2-up. The pair traded wins at 11 and
12. Scheffler tripped to a bogey at 13 to trim his lead to 1-up. Watt squared
things with a birdie at the 15th. Scheffler stumbled to a bogey at the last to
lose the match.
Matthews made a mess of the first three holes, but a double bogey at the third
was enough to give him the win. He was 1-down at that point, but he bogeyed
the eighth to fall 2-down.
Around the turn, Goss won the 10th with a par and the 14th with a double
bogey. Goss birdied the 15th to close out the 5 & 3 win.
Raymond was 1-up for four of the first six holes, but bogeyed the seventh to
square the match. After a pair of halves, Raymond bogeyed four in a row to
slide 4-down. Conners was given the 13th, but Raymond bounced back to take the
14th. Conners, the 2013 Canadian amateur runner-up, parred the 15th to claim
After a back and forth first eight holes, Fitzpatrick took the ninth with a
par. Ball bogeyed three straight from the 10th to go 4-down. The pair halved
the next three holes, giving Fitzpatrick the match.
