Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Payne led four teammates in double
figures with 16 points, as the Loyola Marymount Lions held off the San Diego
Toreros, 65-62, in West Coast Conference action at Gersten Pavilion.
Gabe Levin tallied 12 points and eight rebounds for Loyola (10-4, 0-2 WCC),
which has won four straight games. Alex Osborne netted 11 points, while
Anthony Ireland chipped in 10 points and eight assists.
For San Diego (9-6, 0-2), Johnny Dee lead all scorers with a season-high 28
points, making 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Duda Sanadze registered 18 points
and nine rebounds, while Christopher Anderson handed out 12 assists.
San Diego had control of the game early on, outshooting Loyola from the field
in the first half, 46.4 percent to 40.7 percent, en route to a 32-28 halftime
The Toreros led by three with under seven minutes remaining before the Lions
ripped off a 10-0 run to grab hold of the advantage. San Diego made its
deficit just one with 44 seconds left following a Dee 3-pointer, but after
Levin hit a pair of free throws for Loyola, Dennis Kramer missed the potential
game-tying 3-pointer for the visitors in the waning seconds.
Loyola scored 19 points off of 14 San Diego turnovers. The Toreros were also
quiet from the foul line (4-of-7).
