Macomb, IL (Sports Network) - Ceola Clark poured in 27 points as the Western
Illinois Leathernecks held off the South Dakota Coyotes, 61-59, in a Summit
League contest at Western Hall.
Jack Houpt added 15 points for Western Illinois (21-7, 13-3 Summit) which
has won back-to-back contests.
Juevol Myles and Trevor Gruis each tacked on 19 points for South Dakota
(10-19, 5-11) which has lost seven of its last eight.
The teams were tied, 23-23, at the break. Western Illinois shot 41.7 percent
from the field and held South Dakota to 34.8 percent but was outscored 9-3
from 3-point range.
Though the Coyotes heated up to 52 percent from the field in the final 20
minutes, the Leathernecks nailed eight shots from long range. Western
Illinois had an eight-point lead late in the contest but the Coyotes ripped
off an 11-2 run to pull within a point with 18 seconds remaining. After Adam
Link missed a free-throw attempt, Myles missed a shot that would have pushed
the Coyotes ahead with six seconds remaining. Remy Roberts-Burnett then split
a pair of free-throw attempts for the Leathernecks but the Coyotes didn't have
enough time to get off a buzzer beater attempt.
South Dakota had a 34-27 edge in rebounds. Western Illinois outscored the
Coyotes, 16-12, on points off turnovers.
