Juan Carlos Calva Diaz charged with Confined Unattended Child under 8 years old and Neglect of a Minor
HANOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- A grandfather has been charged with Confined Unattended Child under 8 years old and Neglect of a Minor after he reportedly left a 6-year-old boy alone in a van parked at a Best Buy.
A witness told police that he or she parked next to a black van at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Best Buy in the 7000 block of Arundel Mills Circle in Hanover. The witness reported that the van had its flashers on and that a boy was alone inside the van. The witness went into the store and returned to his or her car after 6 p.m. Police say the witness saw the boy was still there and notified security at the mall.
Police then arrived and they say the child was able to get out of the van. The child was put inside a warm police cruiser while officers continued to investigate, say police. Police tell us that the van was cold to the touch and covered in snow.
Mall security officers determined the van parked in the lot at 4:29 p.m. and they made several attempts via the intercom system to find the child's family members without success, say police.
Then, at 7:30 p.m. the boy's mother and grandfather came back to the van. While speaking to police, they indicated that the grandfather drove the child to the mall. He was there to pick up the boy's mother. The mother said that the child was supposed to be with the grandfather, according to police.
The grandfather, 47-year-old Juan Carlos Calva Diaz of Columbia, Md. was arrested and charged.
As for the boy, he was cold and hungry but found to be in good health after being taken to the hospital for an examination, say police. He was later released to his mother.
