FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Officials are urging dog owners to make sure their dogs are current on their 'distemper' vaccinations.

Animal Control Officers found five raccoons in the past few weeks who have tested positive for canine distemper. They were found in the area of Fort Hunt Road and Namassin Road.

Canine Distemper is highly contagious and could be potentially deadly for dogs, officials said. The signs of canine distemper include sneezing, coughing and thick mucus coming from the eyes and nose. Fever, lethargy, sudden vomiting and diarrhea, depression and/or loss of appetite are also symptoms of the virus, officials said.

If you think your dog(s) is showing any of these symptoms, take them to the veterinarian immediately.
