SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Suitland man has been arrested for allegedly abusing a two-year-old boy who was in his care, say Prince George's County Police officials.
Officials say 26-year-old Clifton Edward Bernard admitted to assaulting the child during an interview. Bernard is charged with attempted murder, first and second degree child abuse as well as first and second degree assault, say police.
According to police, Bernard is in a relationship with the boy's mother.
Wednesday morning, officers were called to the 3800 block of Swann Road for the report of an unresponsive child, say police. The child was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Police tell us he is being treated for several injuries, including head trauma.
Police say Bernard is being held at the Department of Corrections without bond.
