CHEVY CHASE, Md. (WUSA/Chevy Chase Village Police Dept.) --- A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA or 'Commission') will arrive on April 7, 2013, to examine all aspects of the Chevy Chase Village Police Department, according to Chevy Chase Village Police Chief John M. Fitzgerald.

CALEA will examine the policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. The assessors are: Team Leader, Retired Chief Neil Ferdelman from the Hamilton, Ohio Police Department and Deputy Chief Daniel Mills from the Portage, Michigan Police Department.

The three-day on-site assessment process requires the assessment team to review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed and validated.

Once the CALEA assessors complete their in-depth review of the Chevy Chase Village Police Department, they will report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.

The Chevy Chase Village Police Department was accredited in August 1998 and reaccredited in August 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010.

Accreditation covers a three-year period during which the Department is required to submit annual reports and other documentary evidence of continued compliance with 480 written standards.

"Verification by the team that the Chevy Chase Village meets the Commission's best practice standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation - a highly prized recognition of public safety and professional excellence," Chief Fitzgerald said.

On Monday, April 8, 2013, as a part of the assessment process, agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments (limited to 10 minutes maximum) about the Department either by phone or in person as follows:

1. Telephone: Call (240) 876-1493 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The assessment team will take comments directly from callers during this time.

2. In person: Beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Village Hall, 5906 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815

Comments must address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA's standards. A copy of the standards manual is available for review 24 hours a day at the Chevy Chase Village Police Department.

For additional information about this process, call the Village Police Department at (301) 654-7300 and speak with Chief John M. Fitzgerald or Jacqueline Parker, Public Safety Coordinator during normal business hours, or Sergeant Tino Dasilva during the evening hours.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Chevy Chase Village Police Department's ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155.
