(WUSA) -- Maryland State Police say a man was arrested at a New York Airport on Tuesday morning and charged with the murder of a Frederick County man whose body was found in a car trunk in December 2012.
Fifty-one-year-old Michael A. Stahlnecker of Crofton, Md. is charged on a warrant with first degree murder, second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/violent crime in the death of John P. Ryan.
Police say Stahlnecker was arrested shortly before 6 a.m. before boarding a flight at the JFK International Airport. Stahlnecker is being held on a fugitive warrant in New York pending extradition to Maryland.
Thirty-seven-year-old John P. Ryan of Frederick, Md. was found in his 2007 Lexus in a parking lot in the 15000-block of Somerville Drive in Derwood, Md.,on the afternoon of December 3, 2012. His wife reported him missing on November 29, 2012.
Maryland State Police investigators have worked with the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force and say they investigated allegations that Ryan and associates were involved in the importation and distribution of marijuana. Stahlnecker was identified as a close associate of Ryan.
State Police homicide investigators believe Ryan had a meeting scheduled with Stahlnecker on November 28, 2012 at a warehouse, which was leased by Stahlnecker in the 3300 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road in Laurel, Md. A search round Ryan's blood near the back loading dock and on the bristles of a broom outside the rear of the business.
Investigators believe Ryan was shot at the warehouse location and then driven in his car to Montgomery County where his body was found in the trunk.
Investigators say Stahlnecker owed large amounts of money to several persons but have not confirmed a motive in the shooting at this time
