WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia plans to bring in a law firm to examine a human rights group's report on the police department's handling of sexual assault allegations.

Councilmember Tommy Wells, who chairs the council's public safety and judiciary committee, says the law firm will look into a report by Human Rights Watch.

That report, which the police department has rejected as biased and inaccurate, says at least 170 reported sexual assaults went uninvestigated between 2008 and 2011.

Wells has also said he plans to hold a council hearing on the report.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier tells The Washington Post that she's a "bit shocked" she didn't know about Wells's plan but that she welcomes the scrutiny and has more information she plans to release.
