RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA)-- Tasked by President Obama to come up with proposals for tightening up gun control laws in the U.S., the Vice President, Joe Biden took to Richmond to further those discussions at a round table meeting at the Virginia Commonwealth Campus.

Biden, was joined by other leaders to hash out his plan. While the President is pushing congress to pass a ban on assault style weapons the V.P. was focusing on universal background checks and attention on mental health issues.

His plan includes a registry of names that would include a list of people who are not psychologically suitable to own a gun.

Biden said, "so when you go to a gun dealer or Dicks sporting goods you essentially swipe your card. They swipe your card for you in effect, and find out if you are part of the prohibited class of people."

In Virginia, law makers have been debating a bill to require that private sellers conduct criminal background checks on buyers at gun shows. Current laws require only dealers to conduct the checks.
