(WUSA) -- On Wednesday, TIME named President Barack Obama its 2012 Person of the Year. There were several notable runner-ups for Person of The Year: particle physicist Fabiola Gionatti, Eyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education.

TIME says it picked the President in part, because "We are in the midst of historic cultural and demographic changes, and Barack Obama is both the symbol and in some ways the architect of this new America. In 2012, he found and forged a new majority, turned weakness into opportunity and sought, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union."

In 2011, "The Protester" was named Person of The Year. In 2010, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg received the honor from TIME. Former President George W. Bush has also been honored in the past.
