WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A 4-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a stray bullet. Luckily, the bullet struck his hand and is going to be okay.

It happened in the 1200 block of Savannah Place Southeast around 8 p.m. Saturday night.

A family member was seen rushing to the apartment, Sunday afternoon, where the little boy was shot.

She was too upset to talk.

DC Police say bullets started flying and a man was shot in the leg outside the apartment building. A stray bullet went through the home and hit the child in the hand.

The bullet hole is still visibile through the door.

It's unclear if the man who was shot has any connection to the child's family.

Residents say it's not unusual to hear gunfire in the neighborhood but what they do say is surprising is to have a young child caught in the crossfire.

No arrests have been made, and Advisory Neighborhood Commission Commissioner Sandra Seegars says they may never find out who the shooter is because people don't always cooperate with police.

"I can't tell a person to risk their life and not be protected and I can't tell them to not say anything because they could come back and do it again. It's a catch 22."

As the sun set in Southeast, residents still wonder how a four year old could have been caught in the middle of violence and hope for a quieter night.
