UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) - A District Heights police officer has been indicted on charges of attempted murder and related charges, according to Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.
Johnnie Riley, a Sergeant with the District Heights Police Department, has been indicted on charges of attempted murder, first and second degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and two counts of misconduct in office.
Riley turned himself in to the Prince George's County Department of Corrections at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon and is being held on a no bond status. A bond review hearing will take place Friday.
The indictment comes after a September 2012 incident in which Riley initiated a traffic stop on Kalvin Kyle, taking him into custody after finding that the motorcycle Kyle was riding had apparently been stolen.
Riley placed Kyle in handcuffs and placed him in his police cruiser while he secured the scene. When Kyle was able to get out of the ca and exit the cruiser and began running down the street, his hands still cuffed behind his back. Riley fired at Kyle,
