Joseph Bernard Hart, Volunteer Football Coach At Ni River Middle School, Charged After Allegedly Kicking 12-Year-Old Player

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) -- A volunteer football coach is charged with cruelty and injuries to children after allegedly kicking a 12-year-old player to the ground during football practice on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office and Spotsylvania County Schools started investigating the incident.

Following the investigation, 21-year-old Joseph Bernard Hart, a volunteer coach with the Ni River Middle School Football team was charged with a felony cruelty and injuries to children. 

Authorities say Hart has not been arrested on these charges yet.

Authorities say after Hart allegedly kicked the child, the child's father picked him up and confronted Hart. The father then allegedly assaulted Hart.

Maurice Smith was charged with assault and battery. He has not been arrested on these charges.
