SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County police arrested 18-year-old Chidat Tarawally of Northwood High School after stabbing another student Monday morning.

According to a police spokesperson, Tarawally stabbed a 15-year-old male student in his upper leg at approximately 11 a.m. The student was transported from the school at 919 University Boulevard to Holy Cross. Police say he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses informed police that the suspect, later identified as Tarawally, left the school after the assault.

Police were able to identity the suspect with the help of witnesses and school security. At about 12:10 p.m., Tarawally returned to the school were police officers proceeded to arrest him.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the victim was assaulted with a knife in the school hallway near the cafeteria, police say. A knife was recovered on school property but detectives are trying to determine if it is the same knife used in the assault.

Tarawally, of Silver Spring, is being charged with first degree assault, second degree assault, and applicable weapon on school property charges.

Police are still investigating what caused the assault to take place.
