CLARKSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- LH Musser & Sons Inc. of Clarksburg, Md. was cited after an employee who was paving a parking lot became ill in June and died at the hospital, says the U.S. Department Of Labor.

The department says that the company violated OSHA's general duty clause. According to officials, the company "did not maintain a work/rest regimen, train employees on recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses as well as on methods of prevention, and ensure that employees consumed adequate amounts of water."

The worker was paving a church parking lot at 16th and Varnum streets NW in D.C. in June. The worker became sick from heat stress, say Department Of Labor officials, and after being taken to a hospital he died.

In a press release on Tuesday, the acting director of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Baltimore/Washington area office said that "This tragedy underscores the need for employers to ensure that workers have frequent access to water, rest and shade to prevent heat illness and injuries during the hot summer months..."

Officials say LH Musser also failed to report the death to OSHA within eight hours and has been cited for that violation as well.

The company faces a fine of $6,900.
