PASADENA, Md. (WUSA) -- Thursday afternoon, student dismissal from Lake Shore Elementary School was delayed by the search for an attempted burglary suspect in the area. Police say they have the suspect in custody.
Jason Thomas Donaldson of Severn, Md. was arrested and will be charged with "burglary-related" charges. The exact charges were not available.
According to police, at approximately 3:05 p.m. officers went to investigate an attempted burglary in the 8400 block of Alvin Road in Pasadena, Md. They say a caller said a white male suspect wearing a black shirt and blue jeans tried to break into his neighbor's home, but he confronted the would-be burglar and the suspect fled. The suspect was seen running into a wooded area near Maryland Avenue.
Lake Shore Elementary School was located about half a mile from the home. Students were about to be let out of the school for the day and school officials consulted with police. They decided to keep students inside the building. After the police couldn't find the suspect in the area for about 20 minutes, a police patrol commander would give the school the go-ahead to dismiss students -- 6 minutes after their normal dismissal time. But as the students were being dismissed an officer behind the school saw the suspect and chased after him.
Other officers and a K-9 unit responded to the school's parking lot and a police helicopter flew overhead. School officials then brought everyone back inside and secured their facility. Once the officers and suspect left the area they were able to release students.
The suspect was taken into custody.
Police say they continue to investigate the incident.
