SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) -- Two people are dead after a plane crashed in Spotsylvania County near the Shannon Airport, authorities said.
Virginia State Police were notified on Saturday at about 5:14 p.m. about the plane crash. Police say a fixed-wing aircraft crashed and struck a tree near Carrie Court but did not hit any residence. No one on the ground was hurt. According to authorities, John B. Morton Jr., suddenly fell from the sky during a take-off, landing exercise in a Cessna 150M single-engine plane. Police say both Morton and his son Kyle, 13, both died at the scene.
The remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been notified, police said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police say the area will be secured overnight. Investigators planned to return to the scene Monday morning.
