ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) - Police say hours after a standoff with an armed man aboard a sailboat by the Belle Haven Marina in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, the suspect is in custody.

Witnesses say the man on the boat fired several shots earlier Friday night. U.S. Park Police say the suspect came to shore overnight and was apprehended without incident. According to authorities, he is now being interviewed as part of an investigation.

The marina was on lock down as a negotiator tried to get the man to surrender.  Police tried to make contact with the man, including via bullhorn. The suspect has not been identified.

The incident began at about 7 p.m. Friday at the marina, located at 6401 George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Police from several jurisdictions were called to the scene because the land portion of the marina is on the G.W. Parkway, jurisdiction of the U.S. Park Police, and the boat is in the Potomac River, which is MPD's responsibility.

The Coast Guard, FBI and Fairfax County Police also responded to the scene.
