$1200 Office Chairs Raise Questions In Frederick County

FREDERICK Md. (WUSA)  Some very expensive office furniture is raising eyebrows in Frederick County.

The county recently received approval to use state 9-1-1 service fees to purchase 24 specialized ergonomic chairs for $30-thousand dollars.  That's more than $1200 per chair.

"My butt sits in a used chair from the used furniture store," says County Commission President Blaine Young, who questioned the purchase but eventually was persuaded to vote in favor.

Young explained that since the cost was covered by the 9-1-1 service fees it meant the county would not have to spend its own operating funds on chairs, which it would have if he voted no.

The chairs are used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by 9-1-1 dispatchers who work 12-hour shifts each.

"This is a high stress environment," explained Chip Jewell, the county's emergency communications director.   "We're looking out for our personnel."

Jewell said an average office chair costing $400 would last only a year with 24/7 use.  The $1200 chairs are expected to last 4 to 5 years and will end up costing significantly less in the long run, Jewell said.
