BALTIMORE (AP/WJZ) - Authorities say a man who was shot in the student center on the campus of Morgan State University is in serious condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The unidentified man, who is not a Morgan student, was shot about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday on the northeast Baltimore campus. Police say the gunman is still at large.

Morgan spokesman Clint Coleman told The Baltimore Sun that the shooting was "not random," adding that the victim and suspect likely knew each other.

The campus was briefly on lockdown. An alert posted on Morgan State's website at 6:11 p.m. called an all clear, although evening classes were canceled. A police tactical team searched the student center and did not find the gunman.

Morgan spokesman Clint Coleman told The Baltimore Sun that the shooting was "not random," adding that the victim and suspect likely knew each other. Coleman told a local TV station that the victim was in that the victim was in serious condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

People in the area are asked to be careful and to stay where they are.

"It's a very preliminary investigation," said City Councilman Robert Curran. "It was not a student at Morgan who allegedly perpetrated the incident."

School officials sent out a text alert to Morgan students asking them to stay where they are and especially to avoid the student center.

The alert reads, "MSU Alert: Stabbing On Campus. Stay where you are. Stabbing on campus. Suspect at large. Emergency personnel responding! Avoid student center. Updates to follow."

Again, the alert was incorrect; it was a shooting, not a stabbing, on campus.

There is no information on a suspect or motive.
