CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (WUSA) -- Eighteen-year-old Marckel Normal Ross, a junior at Central High School, was found dead on the side of the road at around 7 a.m. in Prince George's County, Tuesday morning.

Authorities received several 9-1-1 calls on Tuesday morning and when police arrived at the scene, they found Ross on the 6100 block of Old Central Ave. in Capitol Heights in an apparent murder police said. Police told 9News now that Ross was found with "trauma to the upper body."

According to police, Ross was walking to school after 6 a.m. when he was shot.

Central High School's principal described Ross on Tuesday morning as a well-regarded student who was in a fashion design group at the school. We have also learned that Ross was a member of the track team and ROTC.

Prince George's County Schools released a statement on the student's death on Tuesday morning:

"The Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) community is saddened beyond measure by the shooting death that claimed the life of Central High School 11th-grader Marckel Ross as he walked to school this morning. Counselors are being made available to students. We extend our deepest sympathies to this young man's family and friends, along with our fervent hope that those responsible for his death will soon be brought to justice."

Police are interviewing students and staff for any information that might help determine what led to the shooting or that could lead to a suspect.

The street is still closed as police and members of a cadet class continue to look for evidence in the shooting.
