WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Forty years ago, 11 Israeli athletes were killed at the Munich Olympics. Five guerrillas and a police officer were also killed during the siege.

On the morning of September 5, 1972, a Palestinian militant group of eight known as Black September climbed the wall around the Olympic village and killed two members of the Israeli team and then held others hostage for more than 21 hours. (http://on.wusa9.com/OaDZM1

At one point, news circulated that the hostages were freed but on September 6, after Germans failed to kill the members of Black September, everyone learned that the hostages had been killed.
