ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA) -- Redskins defensive lineman Kedric Golston
is borderline obsessed with NASCAR.

"The sounds. The smells. The competitiveness. I love everything about it," said Golston after practice on Thursday.

Six years ago Golston became enamored with the sport when his brother took him to a race down in Richmond. Since then, he's been to at least one race every year including Charlotte and Martinsburg.

"I try to plan my Sunday's around NASCAR, but of course I have four kids," smiled Golston.

A Redskin since 2006, Golston has even driven a race car before at Old Dominion Speedway, in Manassas, Va. The 310 pounder has an answer to the age old debate on whether race car drivers are athletes or not.

"NASCAR drivers are athletes. It's harder than you think. It's hot. It's tight. With the stamina, the reflex...I think if you look at what the definition of an athlete is, they fall in line with that," Golston firmly stated.

His favorite drivers include Jimmy Johnson and Michael Waltrip. And Golston even has taken notice of certain pit crews, of which he highly respects Greg Biffle's.

One of the more fun parts about NASCAR is the ability to pick out drivers to root against, but that's something Golston doesn't partake in.

"I understand how hard it is to win out there. I can remember when Kyle Busch wrecked Dale Jr. at Richmond years ago, and everybody was upset," Golston said. "Everybody was like 'why would he do that?' But he's out there trying to win like everybody else."

At 29-years-old, Golston's football days are reaching their middle point. Even though the strapping defender operates and owns a real estate company, Golston can see himself pursuing a career in NASCAR following his retirement.

I actually have talked to coach Gibbs. I've been down on the track several times. I wouldn't be surprised if [a career] happened," said Golston with an excited tone.

"No matter if you are the jack man, or the gas man, or the driver, or the public relations person, it would all excite me."
