LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) -- Despite desperate rescue efforts by rescuers, paramedics, and emergency room physicians, a 21-year-old pulled from a Laurel pond was pronounced dead late Tuesday night. He has been identified Wednesday morning as Kalif Omar Richardson of District Heights.

Mark Brady, Chief Spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire and Rescue Department, says rescue crews were alerted to the possible drowning at an apartment complex pond located on Old Stagecoach Road just before 8:45 p.m. Firefighter/medics from the Laurel area and the county's Technical Rescue Services Team worked to find the male who had been reported missing after entering the pond and never resurfacing.

According to Brady, a rescue boat was deployed and water rescue team members entered the water to search for the missing man. The Prince George's County Police helicopter also responded to the scene to perform an aerial search of the area using infrared equipment to possibly pinpoint the man's location. The helicopter also provided high-powered lights to help illuminate the area for rescuers.

Eleven of the thirty members of the Water Rescue Team who responded to the scene entered the water and systematically searched the area where the male was last reported to have been seen. The water depth in the area ranged in depth from two to four feet, Brady said.

Brady says a rescuer found at the bottom of the pond around 10:20 p.m., approximately 80 minutes into the active search. The victim was quickly brought out of the water to the shore where paramedics were waiting to perform CPR on the male, who was showing no signs of life. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Wednesday morning, police reported that an autopsy was being performed on Richardson. They expect the toxicology results in six weeks.
