WASHINGTON (WUSA) --- Under fire following revelations by the US Attorney that he was the beneficiary of an illegal, underground, shadow campaign during the 2010 mayoral election, DC Mayor Vincent Gray Thursday told 9news now he is refusing demands of three city council members that he step down.
I'm not going to be resigning. I think there are nine members who didn't (ask for his resignation) and indicated they wouldn't be doing so, so i'm not resigning," Gray said.
He spoke after presiding at a swearing in ceremony for a new ethics board, at a time when his own ethics are at issue because of that newly-revealed shadow campaign.
"We are really at a time when District residents have reason to be skeptical about the District government's ability to enforce its own ethics rules," said incoming Board Chairman Robert Spagnoletti.
City Councilman Jim Graham is not among those calling for Gray to resign but said Gray owes the city an explanation.
"I think there is an urgent need for him to make a full statement," Graham told 9News Now.
"I think the city is crying out for a clearing of the air," Graham said.
