FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Officials at Fort Detrick in Frederick say they're adding filtration equipment to a pair of trash incinerators after the Maryland Department of the Environment alleged violations of their operating permit.

An installation spokeswoman told The Frederick News-Post that activated carbon beds will be installed starting Wednesday. She said the upgrades would be operational by Monday.

State environmental regulators say the violations did not negatively affect air quality or public health.

The department sent Fort Detrick a letter in March alleging several permit violations. Besides the missing filtration gear, it said workers hadn't received the required amount of training on municipal waste burners.

A post official responded in April that incinerator operators thought a department inspector had approved the deviations because the smokestack emissions met compliance limits.
