WASHINGTON (AP) - A District of Columbia council committee is taking up the issue of emergency preparedness in the region.

Council member Phil Mendelson, who chairs the public safety and judiciary committee, has scheduled a Thursday morning hearing to discuss the District's response to recent emergencies. That includes the Aug. 23 earthquake that rattled the city and snarled rush-hour traffic for miles and a snowstorm last winter that also left commuters stuck in their cars for hours.

Transportation department director Terry Bellamy, deputy mayor Paul Quander and D.C. homeland security director Millicent West are among the witnesses scheduled to appear.

The hearing starts at 10:30 a.m. in the John A. Wilson Building.
