WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Thirty-one-year-old Christopher Barry, the only son to former DC mayor Marion Barry and the late Effi Barry, was given a suspended 9 month sentence on Tuesday.

Superior Court judge Robert Morin also placed Barry on 18 months probation. Christopher Barry had pleaded last July to misdemeanor possession of marijuana and PCP charges.

The younger Barry and his attorney, Frederick Cooke, refused comment afterwards as did DC Councilman Marion Barry who sat in the courtroom and smiled upon hearing the sentence.

Prosecutors were asking for jail time, explaining that Barry had two prior Virginia cases and a 2005 DC drug case.

When arrested this time, Barry had five bags of marijuana and a half vial of PCP in his apartment in Southeast. Prosecutors told the court he jumped out of a third floor window in only his socks to avoid police.

Conditions imposed by the judge on Barry include a mental health evaluation, a substance evaluation and grief counseling.

His mother passed away from cancer five years ago. Christopher Barry helped deliver the eulogy.
