POTOMAC, Md. (WUSA) -- Challenger and Democratic Candidate of Maryland's 6th district, John Delaney, has claimed victory.

It's the first time in 20 years a Democrat will be seated in the newly drawn 6th district, which now includes a big part of Montgomery County to include Gaithersburg and Germantown.

Delaney swept his competition, causing an upset for the historically conservative stronghold held by 10-term Republican Incumbent Roscoe Bartlett.

Delaney, a newcomer to politics, is a Georgetown Law  graduate, a husband and father of four daughters, ages 5 to 20 years old.

The two candidates are polar opposites in both politics and social issues. Republican Incumbent Roscoe Bartlett, the 2nd oldest member of the U.S. House, aligns himself with the Tea Party. He opposes same-sex marriage and abortion.

Delaney is pro-choice, supports the Dream Act and same-sex equality.
