WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- With the Syria talks showing little progress, there's one big question: What happens if they fail?

At a town hall on Syria at WTOP, one of Mr. Obama's staunchest supporters was second guessing the President. "I support what he wanted to do, I just wish he had gone ahead and done it," says Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA).

If the talks in Geneva on seizing Syria's chemical weapons implode, the President could still hit Bashar Assad -- but he's unlikely to get Congress to sign off. "At this point, I question whether he's ever going to do that given the box he's got himself into," said Moran.

Republican Frank Wolf says the President ought to turn to some old Washington wise men for a solution. "You could always bring in Jim Baker, you could bring in Henry Kissinger, Madeline Albright. Send them to the Capitol and see."

Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) says "If it can't be done (in Geneva), then there's an obligation for us to look at other means. Besides military action."

What that might be remains a mystery.

The hope is that Russian President Vladimir Putin has so much of his personal prestige now riding on a deal that he'll pressure Assad to deliver the weapons that killed more than 1,400 of his own people.

But it's a brave new world when an American President has to depend on the Russian leader to dig him out of a hole and no one has a clear plan B if Putin stops digging.
