NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News authorities are investigating an apartment building fire that injured two people and displaced 90 residents.

Media outlets report that the American Red Cross is helping residents displaced by the fire at the Apex at Ashton Green Apartments.

Fire department Battalion Chief James Barrick says flames and heavy smoke were coming from the three-story building's second floor and roofline when firefighters arrived Monday afternoon.

Barrick says up to 17 apartments could be condemned.

One resident injured in the fire was taken to a local hospital. The other refused treatment.

The cause hasn't been determined.
