CENTREVILLE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County firefighters initially encountered problems while responding to a townhouse fire in Centreville on Monday, according to fire officials.
Firefighters arrived at the townhouse at approximately 1:15 p.m. in the 14825 block of Maidstone Court. They saw heavy smoke coming from the three-story townhouse and went to go battle the blaze, say fire officials.
The firefighters, however, encountered several stairs and halls blocked by various household items, which made it difficult to find and fight the fire, according to fire officials. Firefighters then found the fire in the second floor kitchen, and extinguished it.
There was extensive damage to the second floor. The damage estimate is $60,000, say fire officials.
Fire officials say no one was home at the time, and the three adults and three children who live there are receiving help from the Red Cross.
Fire investigators have determined that the fire was accidental and caused by anomaly in an electrical outlet behind the stove.
