JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a driver escaped injury after her car fell into the James River as she was boarding a ferry.

The Virginia Department of Transportation suspended the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry service after the accident occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

VDOT spokeswoman Lauren Hansen tells media outlets that ferry service resumed Thursday morning.

Hansen says the ferry Surry began to pull away from the pier while the car was boarding. The female driver got out of the car and swam to the dock, where she was pulled out of the river.

A wrecker pulled the car out of the river Thursday morning.

Hansen says the accident is under investigation.
