CLINTWOOD, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are investigating two separate shootings by deputy sheriffs in southwestern Virginia. One of the shootings was fatal.
State police say 60-year-old Gary Dean Carty of Clintwood died after being shot by a Dickenson County deputy. Police say the deputy was responding to a report of an assault early Tuesday morning when Carty pulled out a knife and charged at him. The deputy fired at the man, who died after being flown to a Bristol hospital.
In Grayson County, 34-year-old Randy Lee Anders was shot Monday night as two deputies tried to arrest him for a probation violation and failing to appear in court. Police say deputies fired after Anders aimed a handgun at them. Anders was in the Bristol hospital's intensive care unit Tuesday.
