CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) - An 18-year-old man suspected of shooting and wounding two women at a community college in Virginia has been appointed an attorney at his initial court appearance.

Neil Allan MacInnis was asked by a judge Monday if he understood the charges against him. He replied in the affirmative. He did not enter a plea in Montgomery County General District Court.

MacInnis is accused in the shooting incident Friday at a satellite campus of New River Community College at a mall in Christiansburg. He is charged with two counts each of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and malicious wounding.

Police arrested MacInnis within minutes of the shooting. Both women injured in the shootings have been reported in stable condition.

His attorney could not immediately be reached.
