ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- A dentist from Oakton, Va. has been sentenced for illegally giving prescription medication to patients, employees and a girlfriend, say authorities on Friday. The dentist also used another dentist's identity to bill an insurance company for more than $160,000 in claims.

Fifty-one-year-old Hamada Makarita was sentenced to 25 months in prison. He was also ordered placed on supervised release after he completes his prison term.

Makarita was found guilty of conspiracy, health care fraud, aggravated identity theft, and five counts of dispensing controlled substances last November.

According to court records and evidence at trial, from 2007 to 2012, Makarita illegally distributed and dispensed prescription medicine -- including Fentanyl, Vicodin, and Valium -- to patients, employees, and at least one girlfriend without a legitimate dental purpose. Makarita told the recipients to return some or all the prescribed medicine to him, say authorities. Also, Makarita would give pills to patients and at least one girlfriend in social settings and for sexual purposes. One time, Makaria took explicit photos of an unconscious girlfriend who was under the influence of alcohol and Vicodin.

The jury also found in November that Makarita provided more than $160,000 in services to his family members and billed them to an insurance provider in violation of the provider's contract. He billed the services under the name of another dentist who did not practice in his office at that time. Authorities say Makarita received more than $91,000 in reimbursement from the provider.
