Pope Francis I (formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio)
WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Residents from the D.C. area and Catholics worldwide are sending their congratulations to the newly elected Pope, Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio.
At the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mt. Pleasant-Columbia Heights, members of the now predominantly Hispanic parish are overjoyed about the idea of the first Pope from Latin America. but also concerned that even a Jesuit Pope who takes guidance from St. Francis can deal with all the challenges facing the church.
Pope Francis is the first pontiff from Americas and was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. Besides his native Spanish, Bergoglio also speaks Italian and German.
